NEXT RACE MEETINGS

Following a particularly difficult period where a number of sheduled race meetings at Otaki were abandoned or transferred, the Otaki-Maori Racing Club decided that major ground work was required to reduce drainage issues and improve the track surface.

This work has been completed and they are waiting for the surface to improve to a standard that will allow racing again.

OTAKI-MAORI TO RESUME RACING ON 21 OCTOBER

The Otaki-Maori Racing Club (OMRC) and New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) have agreed that returning to racing on the track any earlier than the meeting scheduled for 21 October could jeopardise the benefits of the drainage work done on the track in the autumn.
Extensive drainage work has been carried out on the Otaki track, from the 800m mark to the 1500m, and the annual track renovation has also been completed.
OMRC and NZTR have decided to err on the side of caution and will return to racing in October. This decision will allow the track to consolidate and have a grass surface that provides confidence to participants and punters.
“We are happy with the way the track is progressing, but we don’t want to risk undoing the benefits by coming back too soon, particularly during the winter period. We want to make sure that the Otaki track can play a significant role in central districts racing”, said OMRC General Manager Ben Jamison.
NZTR Chief Executive Bernard Saundry said the club was taking a practical approach to the situation. “I know the club is keen to be back in action on their home track. They have made the sensible decision to allow the track further rest time. We have all seen instances where tracks have been used too soon after infrastructure works, which can be costly and not in the best interests of the track in the longer term.”

The new venues for the Levin Racing Club’s Ryder Stakes meeting, scheduled for Otaki on July 28, and the OMRC meetings on August 18 and September 27, will be finalised shortly.
